Christian Brunner

is not only a master of his instrument, but his charisma on stage captures the audience from the first note onwards. A versatile life reaching from being a skipper of ocean sailing yachts to travelling to distant countries helped shape his personality. Critics have always described his cello playing as virtuosic, lively  and clever. After playing all five Sonatas by L. v. Beethoven in one evening, Christian was described by the Münchner Merkur as top-soloist. Further references state ”As a virtuoso, Brunner has long passed the phase in which beautiful sound is what counts. His playing is exciting, expressive, vital-dramatic.” “Virtuoso brilliance: Christian Brunner accepts the challenge of works that are considered unplayable, grasps the strings courageously at all times. He inspires with true cabinet pieces, without sacrificing the musical depth and emotion for complicated technique.” “Paganini of the knee violin.” “Virtuoso joyful play.” “Passionate cello playing with a great technical brilliance.” “Masterfully played, lived, felt, loved, going directly into the hearts of the audience.” “Christian Brunner is always an experience. An artist with a wonderful presence, uncomplicated proximity and with convincing interpretations.”

Christian is first prize winner of the International Competition “Rovere d’Oro”, playing the Suites for Violoncello Solo by J. S. Bach, M. Reger an B. Britten. He received his first cello lessons at the age of five from Prof. Bernhard Gmelin, solo cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra at the time. He continued his studies with Prof. Wolfgang Reichardt (Munich Academy of Music) and was junior student at the age of 12. Well-known musicians and teachers encouraged his further development as a cellist and his career. After graduating from high school, Christian first studied physics (meteorology) before completing his cello studies in only four semesters. Since the beginning of his studies until today he has been teaching a large cello class at the Sing- und Musikschule in Kempten. Besides teaching he is also head of the string department and the responsible for inclusion for the entire music school. On top Christian is responsible for teaching the violoncello at the music branch of a local grammar school. His students have won more than sixty first prizes at national and international competitions. One of his chamber music partners was his father, the well-known clarinettist Eduard Brunner, who passed away in 2017. Christian especially distinguishes himself by interpreting complete cello works in only one evening, such as the five sonatas (e.g. Mittenwald Summer Concerts 2012) and all Variations by L. v. Beethoven, the four sonatas by Max Reger (Wurzer Summer Concerts 2016), the two sonatas by Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, as well as all suites for solo cello by Max Reger and J. S. Bach.
